| Application/Uses | Rotenone controls aster beetles, aphids, cabbage loopers, cucumber beetles, Japanese beetles (adult) and other listed insects on vegetables, roses and other ornamentals. Rotenone kills fish not by removing oxygen from the water, but by inhibiting oxygen transfer and cellular res- piration. All fishes are sensitive to rotenone, but some species are more easily killed than others. |
| ECOTOXICOLOGY | Rotenone is toxic not only to insects and fish but also to humans and animals. It is highly toxic to fish and other aquatic life but has low toxicity to birds and mammals. In mammals, the acute toxicity of rotenone is moderate and widely varies between and within species. The oral LD50 value of rotenone in rats is approximately 60-135 mg per kg of body weight. Rotenone is more toxic to female rats than males. In rabbits, the LD50 values for rotenone following IV, oral, and dermal routes are 0.35-0.65, 1.5, and 100-200 mg kg−1, respectively. Depression and convulsions are the common clinical signs with acute toxicity of rotenone. |
